More Than a Point of Reference...
At Standard & Poor’s, our aim is to be the leading provider of global credit benchmarks and research across industries, asset classes, and geographies that investors, businesses, and markets use to foster economic development and growth around the world. To learn more, please see the related video.
Our Track Record
Standard & Poor’s and its predecessor organizations have been in business for more than 150 years. As one of the world's leading providers of independent credit risk research and benchmarks, we publish more than a million credit ratings on debt issued by sovereign, municipal, corporate and financial sector entities. In 2013 alone, we rated $6.6 trillion in new debt. And of all corporate sector “investment grade” ratings issued, just 1% have defaulted over the most recent five-year period. Ours is only one measure of risk, but it’s rooted in our long experience and deep conviction. Click here for more information about default rates.
Across 26 offices around the world, we have 1,400+ analysts, managers and economists continually assessing the variables that affect creditworthiness. In frequent dialogue with senior managers and industry leaders, we examine everything from the state of an enterprise and its position in its industry, to the state of a region and the globe. Then we deliver our credit opinions—on the web, in e-newsletters, in multi-media presentations and on mobile devices.
More than a point of reference – a point of view
We believe that there’s more value in a well-formed point of view than any collection of data. That's why we strive to have our ratings based on more clearly defined methodology, more transparently sourced data and more clearly articulated analyses. To keep current, we have invested in systems, analytics and training. And we continually assess and reassess our ratings methodologies, adopting changes as needed to respond to the changing needs of investors, issuers and markets. All of this enables us to offer insightful opinions that help market participants make more informed business and investment decisions.

Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services supports transparency by making its ratings available free to the public and by maintaining safeguards so that analysts don't have a financial interest in the securities they rate.
